At the time of its development this area of open desert land, just north of the Phoenix city limits, was undergoing rapid residential subdivision.
Period Revival and Ranch houses dominate the streetscape of the historic district, but a few noteworthy Southwest, Contemporary, and International-style houses are also found, illustrating the neighborhood’s eclectic nature.
The Valley’s early movers and shakers were among the first residents here, near the Phoenix Country Club, which was the catalyst for the establishment of La Hacienda and other upscale and picturesque subdivisions in the area.
Despite being surrounded by modern commercial properties and in the shadow of nearby high-rise office buildings to the west, La Hacienda retains a high level of its early to mid-20th century architectural character, according to city historians. It remains one of Phoenix’s small, yet prestigious residential neighborhoods.
La Hacienda Historic District, with 45 homes near Seventh Street and Thomas Road, was one of the last Phoenix historic districts to receive national recognition.
The district received its federal recognition in 2009.

Boundaries: Generally located along Verde Lane and Catalina Drive between 3rd and 7th streets.
